The identity of the Anaheim police officer who shot and killed Gustavo Najera, a 22 year-old unarmed man, is now known. Details into the incident at Sage Page on February 9 remain scant but a public records request by The Other Anaheim named German Alvarez as the officer involved. In an initial review, Alvarez doesn't appear on any Orange County District Attorney investigations into prior shootings by Anaheim police.
Last year, officer Alvarez and his partner Angelica Mejia received recognition from the city council for going "above and beyond" their call of duty in helping an elderly woman living in unkempt conditions. The two washed dishes and arranged for her dirty laundry to be cleaned when dispatched to check in on the 90 year-old.
Whether or not officer Alvarez went "above and beyond" his legal authorities in the police shooting of Najera, whose funeral was held on Sunday, is subject to an OCDA's office investigation. Don't hold your breath.
